To say the least.
Yesterday, when I came home from VBS and lunch with Danny, the bug man was parked in front of my house with my hose spread across my yard and hooked to something in the back of his truck. I was a little taken aback by the sight, so I got out of the car and gave him a "what the heck are you doing" look. He quickly aborted his hose process and said, "I just finished servicing your house and I was getting a little water because I ran out." No problem. I'm not one to be stingy with a basic necessity for life.
So, Tyler and I made our way inside, and, as usual, Daisy was dancing around and wagging her tail ready to go outside. Since the guy had just sprayed for bugs, I wanted to be sure the patio wasn't wet with chemicals before I let her out back. As I looked out the window, my eyes naturally went to the upper right corner where my barn swallow family lives...
lived.
Their nest was on the ground, a clear attack by an enemy exterminator.
I ran back to the front of the house to verbally attack the kid, but, lucky for him, he'd already escaped. I quickly prayed, as I ran to the backyard, that the last surviving baby bird was, in fact, still surviving.
I can't find him. Anywhere.
You have no idea how upset I was and still am. I called the exterminating company and spoke with the service manager who was really nice to listen to me vent even though we both knew that nothing could be done. It was painful to talk to him while I watched the mama and daddy birds fly around the home they were forcefully evicted from.
When Danny got home, he looked in the yard, too, for the baby bird, but he couldn't find him either. We know we lost two babies, and we have no idea what has happened to the third one. I can only hope that he was able to make his little wings carry him to safety.
I am so sad. I hope they will move in again. We sure enjoyed having them, and I wish they could know just how upset we are that this terrible incident happened. Poor birds.
Just thought you might want to know.

Jenn-
I am so sorry to hear about your baby bird. I had a hummingbird nest outside my patio and I loved watching the momma bird take care of her nest and her two little eggs, which then hatched to be perfect little hummingbirds. Last week I came home from school and noticed one on my porch. Apparently, the little thing tried to fly and wasn't able to yet. It was laying there dead. I was and still am so sad about it. The next couple days I must have looked out my window fifty times to check on the other little baby. It went from the nest to different limbs on the tree to I am not sure where. I am hoping it was able to fly off to start its little life. The momma has been around a little, but not like she was before. It makes me so sad...so I feel your sorrow. Like you said, hopefully they will come back!
I'm just going to believe that baby bird is off spreading its little wings right now. Maybe he'll even go find that mean exterminator and poop on his head.
This still makes me so sad. I'm with Julie though...I think the birdie is out flying around making all kinds of friends. Maybe the mama and daddy birds needed a mini vacay from the baby...who knows?
Oh, this is so sad. I read it last night with some tears in my eyes. But I will go along with Julie and Joy-he's off spreading his wings finding some new friends...so, so sad. I'm glad you chewed out the exterminator company!! That at least made YOU feel better!
My baby bird and its momma were flying outside my window today...it made me so happy!!!
Any more news on baby bird? Good for you for giving the exterminator company hell.
I am thinking of that Ann Murray song that said, "spread your tiny wings and fly away..." I am hoping the baby bird did that, and Mama was just showing Daddy what happened, and they're safe.
I hate inconsiderate contractors.
I enjoyed your pictures and comments. I hope you found the little bird doing well later. We leave for Janet's family dinner in a few minutes so we will have much to share after reading you news. Teh pictures were great and although we were with you , I did not realize that you made some of them. We love you. Tyler we miss you so . Papa Joe
I am just as upset about the birds, but sista, it's long past due for an update...
