You wouldn't believe it, but these sweet little eyes cried and cried and boo-hooed and sobbed the entire two hours we were at the pediatrician's office this afternoon.
And Mama wanted to join her before it was all over with.
You'd think that a routine, four-month, well-baby visit couldn't possibly be something to get so worked up over, but from the minute they measured that pretty little head until the second the third vaccination was over with, that daughter of mine screamed. bloody. murder.
It was just awful.
And don't get me started about what I wanted to say to the old lady across the room that kept huffing and puffing over Lydie's wails.
I couldn't help but chuckle a little bit during the commotion thinking of all the times the nurses and doctors in Texas raved over how well-behaved Ty always was on doctor visits. That kiddo never fussed about much of anything and pretty much tolerated anything they ever did to him. If only those folks could see his little sister--she is more than making up for his share of the tears he never shed at the doctor's office.
Anyway, besides being a routine well-baby appointment, we also needed to address some constipation issues. It seems the princess is pretty well backed up, as her bowels have only moved about four times in the last month, and two of those were with the help of suppositories.
Please allow me to insert an apology here to my grown-up daughter who will eventually read this as an adult and be mortified that I talked about her bowels on the internet. Believe me, sweetie, we're among friends here. You'll understand this need for motherhood camaraderie when you have your own babies.
So, our well-baby visit was complicated by this bowel issue along with the fact that none of the doctors or nurses seem to be of natural U.S. origin and I could hardly understand a word they were saying. I can't possibly explain to you how annoying that is.
What I did get was that we are to add two to three teaspoons of 100% pure prune juice to four ounces of water twice a day. It seems the apple-prune juice mix we were already adding wasn't good enough, so we'll try this method and return in a week for further evaluation. I'm not holding my breath, but my log book is ready to take detailed diaper notes for the next seven days.
On top of the prune juice prescription, the doctor delivered a chilling possibility for all of this constipation: a thyroid issue.
As most of you know, I battled thyroid disease for about two years before having the-little-organ-who-couldn't surgically removed. Since then, I have struggled with dosages of medication, routine blood tests and their inaccuracy, and synthetic versus natural drugs. It's been a headache, to say the least. If you don't believe me, ask my husband. It's dang near driven him crazy, too.
As soon as I learned that Baby Watson #2 was a girl, I knew that she would always have to be monitored closely for thyroid related issues because thyroid disease is highly genetic, particularly in female offspring. I have felt guilty ever since then because I feel like I am somehow going to make her life more difficult just because of a disease that she doesn't deserve to have. But, I thought I'd at least not have to worry much about it until her teen years.
Looks like the time has come sooner than I planned.
Apparently, her medical records indicate that her thyroid panel was done at birth and she was just fine. However, the doctor wants to run another blood test next week on our return visit just to be sure her thyroid is still functioning at an acceptable level.
Today, clearly, she wasn't in the mood for any more needles. Can't wait to see how she reacts when we return next week.
In the meantime, would you say a special prayer for the prune juice prescription to work wonders for her tummy and for Lydie's thyroid to be fully functioning and healthy? We'd appreciate any prayers you might pray on her behalf.
God bless her. After all that show she put on this afternoon, she hasn't made a peep the rest of the day. And, when she got a glimpse of her daddy this evening, she was nothing but smiles. She is something else...

Poor thing. We went through that with Boss, and it was no fun. Solids helped too, because you can add the prunes into circulation.
Managing two at the doctor alone, especially with one screaming, is no fun. Glad that is over with. For now, anyway!
I totally know what you mean about the thyroid thing--just on a smaller, lesser scale. Every scream from Addison and every spitup from Connor--and with every dose of Prevacid I felt so responsible and so helpless. We'll put Lydie on her prayer list...now I know why you didn't call back yesterday after the appointment...
I really hope the prune juice helps some...I still can't believe the pear juice, apple prune juice or suppositories didn't work. Bless her little heart (and bowels...)
I will be praying for Lydie. I pray with all my might that she doesn't have thyroid issues. It is probably just plain old constipation, but I am so glad that you are having blood work done to be absoulutely sure. Please let me know how the tests come out. She is so precious. I don't want her to have to endure that disease. However, if she does,we will deal with it the best we can.
I love you all!
Love,
Mom
