We met Garrett, our first real Yankee friend, while we were living in Louisiana. He was a bachelor at the time, and he was known for his sarcastic tendencies and dry humor. Danny and I made it our mission to culture him a little bit while he was living below the Mason Dixon Line, so we took him to Waffle House and taught him how to have a good time at Wal-Mart on a Friday night.
I think we can all safely assume that his life is better for having those experiences.
Anyway, the years came and went and this and that happened and, lo and behold, Garrett found himself a darling girlfriend there in Louisiana. Eventually, that darling girlfriend, Laurie, became his precious, adoring wife. She is a true gem. And absolutely perfect for our sweet Garrett.
As the Air Force would have it, just as soon as they married last summer, they were moving to Virginia. Laurie has been a trooper as she has become more adjusted to this military way of life, which, lest anyone tell you differently, is definitely an art.
This past Friday night, Garrett and Laurie were kind enough to extend us an invitation to have dinner with them at their home. It was the coziest place I'd been in a long time. They live in downtown Alexandria amongst all of the historic treats the city has to offer, and their townhome is evidence of all the character and charm you would expect. All I can say is their place is cute, cute, cute.
Besides the inviting atmosphere, Garrett and Laurie fed us like royalty. Garrett grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, and Laurie made homemade potato wedges, corn dip, and blackberry cobbler. Can you believe that Garrett even made sweet tea for the occasion??
Told you he was a better man for knowing some southerners...
After a delicious meal (and a really embarrassing situation with Tyler spilling his chocolate milk all over Laurie's Pier 1 outdoor cushions--that's another story), Garrett and Laurie took us over to the neighborhood park for some playtime and then we walked along the Potomac River for a stretch. It was such a nice night outside and the perfect way to wrap up a fantastic evening.
We are so thankful that we've been able to spend some time with Garrett and Laurie during their first year of marriage, and we will miss them so much until we see them again.
Ty caught his first lightening bug! They were lighting up the banks of the river like crazy...it was so pretty!
